St. Scholastica men edge competition to win UMAC Indoor Track & Field championship

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men’s track & field team edged the University of Minnesota-Morris by eight points on Saturday to capture its second consecutive Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Indoor Track & Field Championship.

The Saints accumulated a winning total of 191 points, followed by Minnesota-Morris with 183 points. Northwestern College was third with 57 points and North Central University of fourth with 45 points.

UMAC meet records were broken in 13 different events. The Saints as a team also broke three program records on the day.

Tom Lyscio (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS) was named Co-Male Field Athlete of the Meet after winning the shot put, breaking his previous program record with a toss of 48’-3.25” (14.71m). He also broke his previous program record in the weight throw to finish second at a distance of 54’-4” (16.57m).

Justin Hanson (Atwater, Minn./Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City HS) won the 55-meter hurdles with a UMAC Meet record time of 8.11 seconds. Nick Mangan (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS (Minnesota State-Mankato)) nearly lapped the entire field to win the 5,000-meter run, breaking his own previous program record with a time of 15:40.57 seconds. Luke Beckwith (Saginaw, Minn./Proctor HS) won the pole vault with a UMAC meet record height of 13’-7.25” (4.15m).

Peter Drinkwine (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) finished second in the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 43’-3.25” (13.19m). Sherome Milon (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) was second in the long jump with a distance of 20’-9.25” (6.33m).

The distance medley team of Glen Gross (Hoyt Lakes, Minn./Mesabi East HS (Minn.-Duluth)), Anthony Warren (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS), Ben Carlson (Crosby, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS), and Adam Kollman (Cold Spring, Minn./ROCORI HS) set the UMAC meet record in a runner-up finish with a time of 11:04.76 seconds.

The Saints will send some members to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointer Qualifier next Saturday for their last attempt to qualify for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.
