UMAC Women’s Golf Championship Final Results

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. – The University of Wisconsin-Superior officially joined the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) as of July 1, 2015, shortly after announcing  the reinstatement of women’s golf as a varsity sport after suspending it following the 2008-09 season. Saturday represented the immediate impact of the Yellowjackets’ league membership as Wisconsin-Superior maintained its Day 2 lead to win the UMAC Championship at the Alexandria Golf Club with a team score of 1,170.

Playing on a sunny day that featured a high temperature in the mid-70s, the Yellowjackets fought off both a steady 15-20 mile-per-hour wind and seven other UMAC teams to claim the championship trophy. Superior’s Hayley Botten had another good day with a round of 88 to finish in third place overall, helping her team’s cause. Allie Nelson was also solid for the Yellowjackets with a round of 100 on Saturday, following scores of 92 and 99 on Thursday and Friday, ultimately landing her in eighth place overall for individual scores.

Crown College’s Chantelle McCarthy won medalist honors, outscoring the rest of the 40-woman field with a three-day total of 255 strokes, including a final round of 86 . Tera Weyer of North Central University finished in second place with a three-day total of 262 after carding a field best round of 84 on the third and final day of the Championship.

Second-place team finisher Bethany Lutheran College and third-place University of Minnesota-Morris pushed Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday, closing the gap and keeping the team champion in question until the final stretch.  Bethany Lutheran finished with a team score of 1,185 and Minnesota-Morris owned a team score of 1,191, trailing champion UW-Superior by 15 and 21 strokes respectively.

While not guaranteed yet, the UMAC is on the doorstep of receiving its first-ever automatic qualifier for the sport of women’s golf in 2015-16, which would send Wisconsin-Superior to the NCAA Division III Championship at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas on May 10-13, 2016. Once two league schools round out their sport sponsorship requirements, the automatic qualifier will be granted.

The UMAC will announce its postseason awards on Monday, October 12 at umacathletics.com, including all-conference and individual award selections.
