UMAC Women's Soccer Tournament to Begin on Wednesday

ST. PAUL – The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Women’s Soccer Tournament will begin on Wednesday, November 5 with two semifinal contests in the four-team single elimination tournament scheduled for 2 p.m.

The College of St. Scholastica enters the tournament as the top seed after posting a UMAC record of 13-0-1 and claiming their 11th straight regular season trophy. The Saints will host fourth-seeded Northland College as the two teams meet for the third time this season. The LumberJills enter the tournament after compiling a conference record of 7-7. The contest will feature the league’s top two scorers in St. Scholastica’s Kelsey Kehtel and Northland’s Madeleine Wieland as both have scored 19 goals this season, tied for the most among UMAC players. In the previous two meetings this season the Saints were victorious by score of 3-0 and 7-1.

The tournament’s No. 2 seed, the University of Minnesota Morris, will host the other semifinal game against third-seeded Bethany Lutheran College. The Cougars earned home field in advantage in the UMAC tournament by finishing the regular season with a 12-1-1 conference record while the Vikings went 7-7 in UMAC play. Molly Hancuh leads the Cougars scoring so far this season with 10 goals and six assists on the season while Nicole Moldstad leads the Vikings with 11 goals and 13 assists on the season. The Cougars were victorious in the previous two contests between Morris and Bethany Lutheran this year by scores of 4-0 and 2-0.

Wednesday’s semifinal winners will advance to the UMAC Tournament championship game at Saturday at the site of the highest remaining seed. The league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament will be awarded to the 2014 UMAC Women’s Soccer Tournament Champion.
