HEADLINES

St. Scholastica ranked 14th in D3Baseball.com Preseason Poll
Jan. 25, 2012
Coming off a regional final appearance, the St. Scholastica baseball team is ranked 14th in the 2012 D3baseball.com preseason poll. The Saints, who finished last season 12th in the postseason D3baseball poll, went 37-7 in 2011 and advanced to their second NCAA Division III regional final in the last four years. The No. 14 ranking is the highest-ever in the preseason for CSS in this particular poll.

Minnesota Morris Women's Soccer wins NSCAA award
Jan. 25, 2012
Announced earlier this month (Jan. 4) by the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America), the Minnesota Morris women's soccer team was honored with the 2011 NSCAA Team Ethics Award. The Cougars earned the Silver Award, honoring a season where they went without a single red card, while earning less than five total yellow cards.


NEWS AND NOTES


Bethany Lutheran
The men’s basketball team set a new record for most consecutive wins since becoming an NCAA division III institution. The Vikings now have seven victories in a row, the previous record was five.
 
Gavin Kroehler scored a season high 28 points in Bethany’s 80-73 overtime victory over Northwestern Saturday. The Vikings remain the only undefeated team in the UMAC at 7-0 halfway through the conference season.
 
The women’s basketball team shot 47.8 percent from three-point range to secure an 81-76 win over Northwestern Saturday.
 
Jessica Englund recorded her eleventh double-double of the season with 16 points and 15 rebounds against Northwestern.
 
Five women’s basketball players and five men’s basketball players scored in double figures in Friday night’s wins over Crown.

Crown
Men’s basketball player Andy Harrel scored a career high 20 points in Crown’s win over Martin Luther on Saturday

Taylor Jones was an impressive 15-15 at the free throw line in two weekend games. Jones also has 47 steals on the season, moving him into sixth place on the all-time Crown list

Martin Luther
The MLC women's basketball team pushed its winning streak to eight games with a 3-0 week, breaking a previous school record of six straight wins during the 2003-04 season.

The women finished the first half of the conference season 7-0, giving them the best start in program history in conference play.

Erica Babinec is three steals away from tying the all-time school record of 239 steals currently held by her sister Emma, who played for the Knights from 02-06.

Galen Holzhueter scored 20 points in Saturday's men's basketball loss to Crown, giving him ten games this season of 20 or more points.

Justin Danell set a new career high for the second time in a week, scoring 20 points against Crown. His previous career high of 19 was set one week earlier at Presentation.

Minnesota Morris
Women’s basketball sits in second place in the UMAC at 5-2 despite holding leads in the final 90 seconds of each game. They eventually fell by two points on a buzzer beater to Martin Luther, while St. Scholastica own in overtime after forcing the extra session with the tying shot with three seconds to go.

Women’s track and field opened competition this weekend, including a runner-up finish by Jennifer LaRoque in her first career meet. LaRoque placed second in the high jump with a 4-feet-11.75, just two inches behind the winner.

Men’s track and field also opened the indoor season, and was led by Ben Kettler’s record setting toss in the weight throw. Kettler placed sixth in the meet with his 49-feet-6.5 throw, breaking the previous record by nearly half a foot.

Men’s basketball suffered their first loss to Northland since joining the UMAC, when they fell 82-66 on Friday night (Jan. 27). Before the game, the Cougars were 16-0 against the LumberJacks.

Northland
Michael Mackey surpassed the 1,000 career point mark this last weekend with his first basket versus Presentation College on Saturday.  He went in to the weekend needing 14 point to hit the mark and scored 12 in Friday night’s 82-66 win over University Minnesota Morris and 10 versus Presentation.  Mackey currently has 1,009 career points, making him the 16th Northland men’s basketball player to surpass 1,000 points and the ninth under Coach Robinson’s tutelage.  Michael also has 278 career assists, which currently slots him eighth on the school’s all-time assists list.

Northwestern
Men’s track and field athlete Taylor Gish broke his own school record in the 35-pound weight throw competition at Saturday’s Warren Bowlus Open at UW-Stout. Gish, who broke the record in both the preliminary and final rounds, has broken the same record in every meet going back to the beginning of the 2011 season.

Alyssa Wiitala broke the Northwestern women’s track and field record for the weight throw competition at the same meet on Saturday, throwing 12.78 meters.

Northwestern’s top four scorers on the women’s basketball team are shooting better than 80 percent at the free throw line this season, going a combined 168-199 (.844). The Eagles continue to be the third-best free throw shooting team in the nation (NCAA Division III).

The Northwestern men’s basketball team has five players shooting 40 percent or better from behind the three-point line this season. As a team, the Eagles are shooting 39.8 percent from downtown in 2011-12.

Presentation
Women's basketball player Hannah Phillips continued her impressive play scoring 17 points in the Saints’ 75-62 loss to St. Scholastica, and 26 points in the Saints’ loss to Northland College. Phillips has scored at least 14 points in each of the last seven games.
 
Men's basketball player Quincy Davis had a career high 28 points on Saturday night when PC defeated Northland, 62-56. Davis his seven three-pointers in the contest for the Saints.

St. Scholastica
Saturday's 66-62 overtime victory for Women's Basketball over Minnesota-Morris snapped a 13-game losing streak to the Cougars.
 
With Jonah Dahlman's 32 points vs. Minnesota-Morris on Saturday, the Saints have now had two players record a game of 30 or more points for the second consecutive season. Prior to that, it wasn't done since 2006-07.
 
The men's track & field team is ranked eighth in the Central Region by the USTFCCCA.
The women's track & field team is ranked second in the Central Region by the USTFCCCA.
