UMAC hands out 306 winter and spring academic all-conference awards
ST. PAUL -- 306 winter and spring student-athletes from member institutions earned Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Academic All-Conference honors the league announced on Tuesday. Those award-winners join the 359 fall individual academic all-conference awards to account for a total of 665 accolades throughout the 2010-11 academic year.
To be eligible for nomination, student-athletes must meet the following criteria:
1. Post a 3.50 or better semester grade point average based on a 4.0 scale.
2. Compete in the sport in which he or she is nominated in the season that corresponds with the selection.
The College of St. Scholastica, who claimed the who claimed the most individual winter and spring honorees in 2009-10, remained on top in 2010-11 with 85 academic all-conference honorees, an improvement of 11 student-athletes from a year ago. As a league, the UMAC fell one short of its all-time winter and spring high number of 307 academic all-conference awards, which was set in 2009-10.
Northwestern College came in second with 56 academic all-conference winners, while Martin Luther College followed with 45 individual accolades. The University of Minnesota, Morris was fourth with 35 awards.
Women’s track and field took the top spot in terms of the individual sports, claiming 55 awards. With 54 academic accolades, baseball followed close behind with 54 awards while men’s track and field and women’s basketball tied for third place with 41. All but one of the eight winter and spring sports boasted 25 or more individual accolades.

This year’s 306 winter and spring individual accolades is second to 2009-10’s 307 academic all-conference awards, but tops the 254 certificates that were distributed in 2008-09.
In the team academic all-conference awards competition, Martin Luther College claimed the best grade point averages (GPA) in three sports including men’s basketball and men’s and women’s tennis. The College of St. Scholastica, North Central University, Northland College, Northwestern College and Presentation College nabbed the remaining five sports. UMAC-sponsored sports that occur in the winter and spring and their corresponding top academic teams are listed below.
