St. Scholastica wins 14th straight UMAC men's tennis title

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men’s tennis team captured its 14th consecutive Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championship today with an 8-1 win over the University of Minnesota-Morris at the Central High School tennis courts.

The Saints improve to 10-9 overall and 9-0 in the conference. The Cougars fall to 3-5 overall and 3-4 in the UMAC. The Saints extend their regular season conference win streak to 84 matches.

The Saints swept all three doubles matches on the day. The No. 1 team of Dillon Sterle (So.-Hibbing, Minn.) and Brendan Anderson (Jr.-Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) won 8-2. The No. 2 team of Jacob Engelstad (So.-Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) and Tucker Combs (Jr.-White Bear Lake, Minn.) blanked their opponents 8-0 and the No. 3 team of Tim Dean (Jr.-Rhinelander, Wis.) and Joe Vidmar (Jr.-Chisholm, Minn./Hibbing) came out on top 8-4.

In singles play, Sterle won at the No. 1 flight 6-1, 6-2. Brian Lindberg (So.-Hermantown, Minn.) defeated his opponent at the No. 3 spot 6-1, 6-1. Kevin Hilpert (So.-Stillwater, Minn.) gave up just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 4 spot. At No.5, Dean won 6-1, 6-1 for his seventh consecutive singles victory and at No. 6 Tom Schneuer (Jr.-Duluth, Minn./Central) won 6-3, 6-0.

The Saints will wrap-up their UMAC regular season schedule on Saturday when they host Bethany Lutheran at the Central High School tennis courts. Action begins at 9 a.m.
